Hen weekends in Spain
Spain, a land steeped in wonderfully complicated history, a land with a unique culture, unique sights and hidden secrets. A land where in places you can swim in the warm, beautiful blue azure waters of the Mediterranean in the morning, but, by afternoon, can be strapped into your skis and shimmying down slopes towards an evening of off piste entertainment. A land of loud voices, gestures and heated debate, a land of erotic dance, wondrous art and romantic whispers. Oh, and then there's tapas, tortilla, paella, flamenco, beaches, sun, sea, fiestas, siestas and sangria, Picasso, Dali and Gaudi. Marbella, Barcelona and Madrid. Football, passion, and bulls, but no fighting.
There is golf all year round. There are long, lazy walks through historical cities and towns, there are days of long, lazy relaxation on golden sands, with wine in hand. Then there are nights of local cuisines, of fantastically created salad dishes all overspilling with the ripest avocadoes, tomatoes, onions and the greenest leaves ever seen, all smothered in life saving olive oil. There are prawns and langoustines to follow, with octopus and lobster, all fished a stone’s throw off the same beaches you sunned yourself on that very same day. There are selections of the tenderest meats all ready to hit the hot bbq coals, fillets of local beef, world famous Iberico pork, chorizo stuffed herbed sausages, juicy chops, ribs and pinchitos. To finish, there is jamon serrano and manchego cheese with oranges from Sevilla to cleanse the palate. All this washed down with lashings of wine, sherry, San Miguel and some feverish, flamboyant Flamenco dance moves. Spain is a wonderful country, a country we have all either been to or aspire to go to, but also a country that can never be discovered or conquered in just one visit. A country of diversity and contrast, where you can rise late but still have an afternoon nap and not feel guilty. A country where you have convinced yourself you speak the dialect but realise that in truth, you can only stretch to ordering a beer and asking for the bill. Yes, this is Spain, it is a country full of life, love and sunshine, of pride and of optimism, a country where you can lose yourself for days or months on end but find, as with everyone else, that it is never enough. A country where you will be welcomed time and time again, a country you will visit time and time again, a country where friends met, will be met, time and time again.
